Liza Kirkpatrick, director of full-time MBA programs for the Career Management Center at the Kellogg School of Management, has a long career in recruiting. Before joining Kellogg, she spent almost a decade with a staffing firm, helping to grow it from 12 people to five different offices in Chicago. When she came to Kellogg in 2008, she immediately had to prove her worth in a down market. Since then, she has held several different positions within career services but has always remained focused on student coaching, with oversight of the employer relations team, the coaching team and the operations team.
In the interview that follows, she unpacks the recruiting process at Kellogg, shares some of the shifts she’s seeing in terms of employer hiring and student aspirations and stresses the importance of thinking about your career goals before arriving on campus. Continue Reading
Tim Bossidy’s passion for finance is what brought him to Kellogg, where he is a second-year student. He felt the school’s curriculum, personalized career support and collaborative community would set him apart as he pursued a career in investment banking.
This past summer, Tim was one of four Kellogg students who interned at Goldman Sachs. All four will return to work at Goldman Sachs full time after graduation.

Jeff Hoffman is a second-year student interested in entrepreneurship and technology. He is passionate about the intersection of data science and application, focusing specifically on how data sets and insights can be leveraged to create, refine and market new products and services.

Ninety-five percent of the Full-Time Class of 2015 received an offer by three months post-graduation, as reported today by Kellogg’s Career Management Center(CMC). Kellogg also saw an increase in acceptances this year — 92 percent of students accepted a full-time offer by three months post-graduation.

Interviewing, resume preparation, review of job listings – these are the topics many people think of as they engage in the job search process. But what about research? In an academic setting, the definition of research is established and easier to define. Career research is a whole different story.
Thoughtful and high-quality research plays a role in every stage of the MBA job search process. Exploring functions and industries help educate you about the trade publications in a certain sector and who the people are with successful careers. Researching industries and companies allow you to dive deeper in a specific area once you have decided on a sector. Following the latest trends, as well as identifying a target list is important. A target list can be devised by geographic location, size of company, company culture, etc.
We have an embedded team of information specialists in Kellogg’s Career Management Center focused on helping students navigate business information. These subject matter experts hold group and one-on-one sessions, as well as demonstrate methods for comparative market analysis, company research and managing information with RSS news feeds. Kellogg students become better versed in their industries and can assemble comprehensive company lists for individual searches.
More than 50 startups will be at Northwestern University on Wednesday, April 1 for the 2015 Startup Career Fair. As students from across the University prepare to meet with representatives in hopes of landing a position at one of these startups, we turned to Kellogg’s Career Management Center for tips and advice that students should keep in mind for the event. Even if you are not attending the fair, the content can be applicable to anyone pursuing a new job.
What is DAK? That was my first question as I began my role as Managing Director of the Career Management Center (CMC) just over a year ago. DAK stands for “Day at Kellogg” and we held our first DAK of 2015 this past February.
DAK is an extended weekend where admitted students and their spouse, significant other, partner, etc. come to get a feel for the real Kellogg. It is a peek behind the curtain and a glimpse into what a life at Kellogg would feel like, from the social experience and academic life to my personal favorite – navigating your career life!
